1 Introduction

Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) has been very widely used in the field of life by virtue of its excellent performance, low price, high strength and high corrosion resistance, and its usage is the second largest category of plastic products after polyethylene. However, due to the poor processability of PVC, additives need to be added, the most important of which is plasticizer. The plasticizers used in PVC are mainly phthalate esters, and the small molecule plasticizers represented by DOP have excellent plasticizing effect and good compatibility with plastics, but they also have many shortcomings. They will migrate to the surface of plastic products during the long-term application of materials, have serious extraction in special environments, and are prone to failure in cold or high temperature environments, and these deficiencies greatly reduce the use time and functionality of products.

From the perspective of multi-functionality, environmental protection and durability, our company designs a series of polymer additives, changing the molecular weight of the additives to improve the durability and high temperature resistance of the additives, and making them more compatible with PVC through the addition of functional monomers to improve the migration resistance and extraction resistance of the additives. We added the synthesized additive to PVC material to investigate the processing effect of this polymer additive applied to PVC in comparison with small molecule DOP. The main findings are as follows: In this study, we selected emulsion polymerization to synthesize a series of methacrylate polymers using methyl methacrylate (MMA), styrene (st) and acrylonitrile (AN) as copolymer monomers. We have studied the influence of different initiators, emulsifiers, reaction temperature and the ratio of each component on the polymerization process in emulsion polymerization, and finally obtained high molecular weight plasticizing aids ADX-1001 and low molecular weight plasticizing aids ADX-1002, and the products have good compatibility with PVC, which can effectively reduce the plasticizing time of PVC resin, reduce the processing temperature, make the products soft and apply to injection molding.

2 Recommended Dosage

The amount of plasticizing aids ADX-1001 is 10 parts per 100 weight parts of PVC resin.

3 Performance Comparison With Plasticizer DOP

1. Prepare PVC products according to the formula in the following table

Table 1

Name Stabilizer 4201 Titanium Dioxide Calcium Carbonate PVC PV218 AC-6A 660 DOP
Dosage (g) 30 10 60 75 1500 4.5 4.5 3 150

Table 2

Name Stabilizer 4201 Titanium Dioxide Calcium Carbonate PVC PV218 AC-6A 660 ADX-1001
Dosage (g) 30 10 60 75 1500 4.5 4.5 3 150

Table 3

Name Stabilizer 4201 Titanium Dioxide Calcium Carbonate PVC PV218 AC-6A 660 ADX-1002
Dosage (g) 30 10 60 75 1500 4.5 4.5 3 150

2. Processing steps of PVC products: Compound the above formulations separately and add the compound to the rheometer.
3. Compare the effect of ADX-1001 and DOP on PVC processing by observing rheological data.
4. The processing properties of PVC after adding different plasticizers are shown in Table 4 below.

Table 4

No. Plasticizing Time (S) Balance Torque (M[Nm]) Rotation Speed (rpm) Temperature (°C)
DOP 100 15.2 40 185
ADX-1001 50 10.3 40 185
ADX-1002 75 19.5 40 185

4 Conclusion

After experimental verification, the plasticizing aids developed by our company can effectively shorten the plasticization time of PVC resin and reduce the processing temperature compared to DOP.
